We Are Aliens Anime Film Locks September 25 Japan Release

A standout new anime feature is stepping into the spotlight. Director Kōhei Kadowaki's original film We Are Aliens (我々は宇宙人) will open nationwide in Japan on September 25, 2026, with distribution handled by the production team at NOTHING NEW alongside partners.

The story centers on two boys, Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, who become inseparable during an elementary school summer only for jealousy and misunderstandings to fracture their bond. Years later, as adults, buried memories resurface and demand they confront what tore them apart.

Kadowaki, who previously crafted the ending sequence for BEASTARS Season 2 and music videos for YOASOBI, served as planner, writer, director, storyboard artist, and editor. Yaffle composed the score for the Japan-France co-production with Miyu Productions. A successful crowdfunding campaign helped support the project, which premiered to strong response at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight in May and screened in competition at Annecy.

International sales agent CHARADES has already lined up distributors across Asia, including Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The September date marks a major milestone for the small but ambitious production outfit NOTHING NEW as it brings this personal, visually distinctive story to Japanese audiences.
