Sunrise × SHAFT Team Up for Dystopian 'Fool Night' Netflix Anime

Sunrise and SHAFT have officially announced their first-ever collaboration: a television anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda's seinen manga Fool Night. The series will stream worldwide exclusively on Netflix in 2026.

Set in a dystopian future where thick clouds have blocked the sun for a century, the story follows young Toshiro Kamiya. Crushed by poverty and his mother's illness, he weighs the life-altering "transfloration" procedure — a technology that turns humans into oxygen-producing plants. What begins as a desperate bid for survival quickly becomes a profound look at identity, ethics, and what remains of humanity.

Kōki Uchiyama voices Toshiro Kamiya, with Minako Kotobuki as childhood friend Yomiko Horai. Atsuyuki Yukawa directs, Jin Tanaka handles series composition, Robert Sato designs the characters, and Tatsuya Katō composes the music. The pairing blends Sunrise's production muscle with SHAFT's distinctive visual style.

Yasuda launched Fool Night in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior in 2020. Now with 12 volumes, the manga has earned recognition for its raw exploration of despair and societal limits. This long-awaited anime arrives at the perfect moment for fans craving thoughtful, atmospheric sci-fi drama.
