Otokonoko Rom-Com 'I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl' Gets TV Anime

The popular romantic comedy manga I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl (Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata) by Azusa Banjo has officially been greenlit for a television anime. A brand-new official X account launched the announcement today, sharing a special commemorative illustration drawn by the creator herself to celebrate the news.

The story centers on Kenshirou Midou, a popular high school student with a secret love for cosmetics. When he practices his makeup skills on his shy, unassuming male childhood friend Hiura Mihate, the results are dramatic. Hiura emerges looking like a beautiful girl and decides to embrace the change, showing up to school in the girls' uniform. What begins as an experiment quickly blurs lines of friendship, identity, and budding attraction in this sweet yet emotionally layered otokonoko rom-com.

Banjo originally launched the series as a webcomic in late 2019 before it moved to Ichijinsha and pixiv's comic POOL platform. It has built a devoted following and frequently ranked high in fan polls for most-wanted anime adaptations. The 12th tankobon volume arrives on June 25, with the series surpassing 600,000 copies in circulation including digital editions.

In a comment released with the news, Banjo expressed pure joy at seeing her long-desired theme of a protagonist-adoring otokonoko heroine come to animated life. She noted that Hiura moving and speaking will make the character even cuter and hopes the duo will win over even more fans. Studio, staff, cast, and release details are still to come.
