Fan Support Secures English Release for Shiten Akiyama's HORIZON

In a rare case of international fans directly shaping a manga's future, Kodama Tales announced an official English release for Shiten Akiyama's debut series HORIZON, due January 2027. The LA-based publisher is betting on a title that has stayed relatively under the radar in Japan despite its distinctive emotional core.
HORIZON follows Mieko Fujiwara, a drained office worker approaching thirty who impulsively puts on her old school uniform one night. Wandering to a park in search of some spark from her younger days, she meets an impossibly handsome young man whose presence upends her outlook. Serialized by Shōnen Gahōsha, the story blends quiet introspection with the pull of nostalgia and unexpected connection.
The licensing stems from a powerful wave of grassroots backing. Earlier this year Akiyama posted openly about the financial pressures many new manga artists face. Overseas readers responded with donations topping ¥900,000 in short order, plus vocal advocacy that helped push the work across borders. The artist had even experimented with sharing his own English translation online before publisher concerns arose.
Translator David Evelyn, known for Kaiju No. 8 and other major titles, is handling the English edition. Akiyama called the development a potential turning point, crediting the publisher for taking a chance on an unestablished domestic work and readers everywhere for refusing to let the story stay invisible.
The news offers a hopeful signal that dedicated communities can sometimes bypass the usual domestic success requirements, opening doors for distinctive voices that might otherwise stay niche.
