Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Returns in Special Formats After ¥2.6B Run

After wrapping an extended theatrical run on June 18, the original anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is returning to Japanese theaters with a major upgrade. The musical fantasy reimagining of the classic folktale will screen in immersive special formats including motion-seat 4D experiences, three-screen SCREENX, the hybrid ULTRA 4DX, and Dolby Atmos audio, alongside regular presentations.
Directed by Shingo Yamashita in his feature debut, the film from Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato follows high schooler Iroha Sakayori and the free-spirited Kaguya as they team up in the virtual world Tsukuyomi. Packed with performances and songs from leading Vocaloid producers, it became a standout hit for a Netflix original, drawing over 1.2 million admissions and surpassing ¥2.668 billion at the Japanese box office.
The revival announcement arrived with a new special trailer promising an even more dynamic big-screen experience. A 3D virtual event, the Tsukuyomi Kansha-sai, is also slated for December. The film first hit Netflix in January before expanding into a long-running theatrical phenomenon that far exceeded initial plans.
For fans who cheered through the original run or missed it the first time, September 18 offers a fresh chance to experience the story's high-energy visuals and emotional core in premium formats. The success highlights how original anime features continue to draw passionate crowds when they deliver something truly distinctive.
