Best Sci-Fi Anime of 1979

In the year 0079 of the Universal Century, humanity has expanded into space, residing in colony clusters referred to as "Sides." One such Side proclaims itself the "Principality of Zeon" and initiates a war against the Earth Federation, the governing authority that controls Earth. Utilizing powerful humanoid robots called "mobile suits," Zeon swiftly gains an advantage. Nine months into the war, the Earth Federation has created its own formidable mobile suit, the Gundam. When Zeon attacks the colony housing the Gundam, a 15-year-old civilian named Amuro Ray is suddenly thrust into a battle that carries him across Earth and space, opposing the enemy's ace pilot, Char Aznable.

Nobita Nobi is an ordinary fourth grader. That changes when a blue robot cat emerges from his desk drawer. Introducing himself as Doraemon, the robot explains that Nobita's future descendants in the 22nd century are living in poverty due to all the mistakes he has made. They have sent Doraemon to act as a guide and mentor to Nobita, hoping to improve their future. However, Doraemon soon discovers that Nobita is the laziest and weakest student in his entire school. To aid his mission, Doraemon carries a four-dimensional pocket filled with various futuristic gadgets and machines. Unfortunately, these often end up causing even more trouble for Nobita. Can Doraemon truly succeed in changing Nobita, or will he stay the same?

Joe Shimamura and his comrades seem like ordinary people, but they are far from it. Joe is actually Cyborg 009, part of a group of cyborgs dedicated to fighting for justice. Each cyborg possesses a unique ability, ranging from melting any substance to breathing underwater and flying. He and the other eight cyborgs were unwillingly transformed by the Neo-Black Ghosts organization to serve their own agenda. However, they chose to unite and wield their powers against their former creators and any evil forces.

After Leader X is apparently destroyed for good at the conclusion of Gatchaman II, a surviving fragment of him grows and transforms into Z. Alongside the head of the Egobossler family, Count Egobossler (and his two underlings Mechandol and Kempler), Z is determined to destroy Earth and once again target the Science Ninja Team. Following Anderson's death, Dr. Nambu becomes the new leader of the ISO, while the team is confined to the underwater base Gallatown (also called "G-Town"). Engineer Kamo is introduced, and after the New GodPhoenix is destroyed early on, the team receives the new Gatchaspartan as their mecha. The Gatchaspartan also has a special mode called Hypershoot, which only Ken can use (with his new "Gatchafencer" sword). As the story progresses, it is revealed that the radiation exposure from frequent use of the Hypershoot is slowly killing Ken, and continued use would result in death. Meanwhile, Z plans to destroy Earth using an antimatter asteroid codenamed "Poison Apple."

In 2052, Earth enjoys a period of peace until the Death Force—merciless aliens fleeing a dying solar system—arrives, seeking a new home. They strike Earth using a colossal satellite vessel known as Terror Star and begin terraforming the planet for their own use. Humanity's sole hope rests on Colin Collins and a handful of his fellow surviving students, who must operate a secret submersible craft capable of battling the invaders both on the sea and in outer space.

It is the year 1995. An alien army from the Saar cluster called the Akron has conquered Earth. The planet's cities lie in ruins, and the remaining survivors endure harsh lives in shanty towns and villages. War orphan Kento hides in a cave with his companions to escape bandits. Inside, they discover the secret base of Dr. Earl, an inhabitant of the planet Helios—a world also conquered by the Akron. Dr. Earl escaped to Earth, bringing with him Helios's greatest technological achievement: the super robot Daltanius, whose power is amplified when combined with the intelligent lion robot Beralios. Dr. Earl entrusts the fight for Earth to Kenta, who turns out to be a descendant of the long-vanished Helian royal line.

The planet has turned into a barren desert landscape, with survivors striving to reconstruct society. Daigo Otaki, an orphan brought up by his uncle, reaches adulthood and learns that Victor City was actually conceived by his father, a brilliant scientist. His sister Saori has been overseeing the city. She urges Daigo to accept the legacy his father left behind: a powerful super robot system called Gordian. Daigo then enlists in the Mechacon mechanic combat 18th regiment unit, a law enforcement group tasked with protecting Victor City from the assaults of the Madokuta organization.

Dr. Monja is a scientist fascinated by the mysterious Elixir of Life, which is said to grant eternal life and everlasting youth. He constructs a device called the "Time Tunnel" to enable a group of young adventurers to embark on a journey through time and across various dimensions in search of a definitive answer. Meanwhile, a trio of villains is also pursuing the same elusive goal.

By 1999, a team of five young people is established as a specialized paranormal and mystery investigation unit. The series blends live-action tokusatsu footage for vehicle sequences with animated segments for character-driven drama.
