Synopsis
In Crayon Angel, Tanaami reflects on his childhood experiences in wartime Japan during the Second World War. The animation blends wartime footage, family photographs, and pop imagery, often framed through fusuma-like grids that fracture the image and create a sense of separation from the viewer. The soundtrack features a haunting heartbeat, siren sounds, and Robert Plant’s moans. The title refers to a wartime campaign by a confectionary company that encouraged children to submit crayon drawings of its brand icon—an angel—which left a deep emotional impression on Tanaami as a child.
