An alchemy experiment gone horribly wrong shatters the lives of brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric. The Four Cardinal Heroes are a group of regular guys from present-day Japan called to the kingdom of Melromarc to serve as its saviors. Melromarc is a country suffering from the Waves of Catastrophe, which have repeatedly devastated the land and brought disaster to its citizens for centuries. The four heroes are each given a sword, spear, bow, and shield to defeat these Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, is cursed with the role of the "Shield Hero." With nothing but a weak shield, Naofumi is looked down upon and mocked by the other heroes and the kingdom's citizens because of his poor offensive power and unimpressive personality. After the heroes receive supplies and companions to train alongside, Naofumi begins his journey with the sole person who agrees to join him, Malty Melromarc. However, she soon betrays him, and he is wrongly accused of assaulting her. As a result, Naofumi faces severe discrimination and hatred from the people of Melromarc for a crime he never committed. With deep hurt and distrust burning inside him, Naofumi sets out to build his own strength and repair his reputation. But as he goes on, the hardship of traveling alone becomes too great, so Naofumi purchases a dying demi-human slave named Raphtalia to join him. As the Waves draw closer to the kingdom, Naofumi and Raphtalia must battle to ensure the kingdom's survival and shield its people from their doomed destiny.

On the battlefield, his combat skill is second only to Griffith's, as he takes on large groups of enemies by himself. With Guts' immense strength and Griffith's leadership, the Band of the Falcon dominate every battle they fight. But something sinister lurks in the shadows, threatening to change Guts' life forever.

After his relationship with Eris Boreas Greyrat escalates to a new level, Rudeus Greyrat is overjoyed. However, his happiness is fleeting when Eris suddenly departs to pursue her own path. While on a mission with the party Counter Arrow, which he recently joined, Rudeus narrowly escapes death—an incident that finally forces him to break free from his despair. Alongside his new companions, he rediscovers the joy of everyday adventuring and presses on toward his original ambition of making the most of his second chance at life.

Kiki, a thirteen-year-old witch still in training, must live on her own for a full year in a faraway town to become a fully qualified witch. Leaving behind her family and friends, Kiki undertakes this tradition by flying out into the wide world on her broomstick, accompanied by her black cat Jiji. After settling in the coastal town of Koriko, Kiki has trouble adjusting and ends up roaming the streets without a place to stay—until she meets Osono, who gives Kiki room and board in return for helping deliver items from her small bakery. Soon afterward, Kiki decides to start her own courier service using her broomstick, beginning her journey toward independence. As she tries to find her place among the townspeople, Kiki brings them exciting new experiences and comes to grasp the true meaning of responsibility.

It appears that following the guidance of the faceless deity Hitogami has yielded excellent results for Rudeus Greyrat. After enrolling in the University of Magic as instructed, Rudeus is reunited with his childhood friend Sylphiette, who worked tirelessly to heal his condition. As their bond deepens, the pair plans a wedding celebration, inviting friends from across the years to officially formalize their union. However, Rudeus’s recent good fortune does not mean his troubles are finished. The research he is assisting Shizuka Nanahoshi with reaches an impasse, causing her to fall into a severe depression reminiscent of his past life. Additionally, a letter from his father, Paul, introduces complications to Rudeus’s relationships, while Sylphiette remains largely unaware of his true history. Confronted with these obstacles, Rudeus must apply the wisdom he has gained in this new world to overcome the challenges inherent in living life to its fullest.

After passing the First-Class Mage Exam, the group consisting of elven mage Frieren, warrior Stark, and first-class mage Fern enters the perilous Northern Plateau on their way to Aureole. Fern, meanwhile, reflects on the various gifts she has received, viewing them as tributes to the loved ones she holds dear. Frieren, still committed to comprehending human nature, recalls her time with the Hero's party and a brief meeting with a legendary individual. As she contemplates the flow of time, she wonders if she has genuinely evolved, yet subtle actions suggest she may have grown more human than she acknowledges.

Having survived the brutal trials of Idofront, Riko now holds a White Whistle, granting her passage into the Abyss's sixth layer—the Capital of the Unreturned. Together with Reg and Nanachi, Riko begins exploring this uncharted territory, where the ruins of the promised Golden City lie. As the trio adjusts to the harsh surroundings, they soon encounter dangerous creatures and treacherous terrain. Their journey leads them to a village inhabited by strange beings called "hollows." Despite the unsettling atmosphere that greets them, the three press onward to uncover the secrets of the settlement and the forgotten legacies of adventurers who once descended into the unexplored Abyss's horrors.

Having bonded through shared grief, the weary Nanachi accompanies Riko and Reg as they venture deeper into the Abyss. They face the Sea of Corpses, the fifth layer and the deepest point from which one can return without losing their humanity. Standing in their way is the masked sadist Bondrewd, whose gruesome laboratory acts as a final barrier for those seeking to go further. The sociopathic scientist intends to exact a heavy toll from Riko’s group. Haunted by Bondrewd’s past cruelty, Nanachi struggles with intense inner turmoil upon his reappearance. The group discovers that Bondrewd’s sole vulnerability is Prushka, an impulsive girl who claims to be his daughter. Riko, Reg, and Nanachi befriend Prushka and collaborate with her to thwart her father’s schemes and reach the sixth layer of the Abyss.

Despite stopping the latest Wave of Catastrophe, Naofumi Iwatani, the Shield Hero, cannot let his guard down. Queen Mirelia Q Melromarc reactivates his responsibilities by notifying him that the other three Cardinal Heroes have vanished without a trace and commanding him to track them down. With no clues regarding their whereabouts, Naofumi redirects his attention to a more pressing issue: the growing demi-human slave trade. Determined to fix this injustice, he and his companions travel to Zeltoble, a nation of mercenaries where the illegal trafficking of demi-humans has become very profitable. To raise the money needed to free the enslaved, Naofumi and his allies wear disguises and participate in underground coliseum matches, deliberately throwing fights to manipulate the betting odds and secure a huge reward. Yet, as the threat of another Wave of Catastrophe looms, the Shield Hero must stay devoted to his mission to find the missing heroes in order to protect the people he holds dear.
