Rina and her younger sibling Mishalli, Jewish refugees who escaped Europe but are now separated from their parents, are the story's core. A local Chinese boy named A-Gen encounters Rina and helps both her and Mishalli endure the struggles of survival. As they forge deep friendships, the children partake in various adventures and resist the Japanese forces along with their Nazi collaborators who control the city. The ongoing Second Sino-Japanese War amplifies the tension, while the uncertain fate of Rina and Mishalli's parents in Europe casts a shadow over their lives.
