Spontaneous Human Combustion is a chaotic affliction that has tormented humanity for many years, randomly turning normal people into blazing, aggressive beings called Infernals. While Infernals represent the first-generation cases of Human Combustion, second- and third-generation individuals are known as pyrokinetics—humans blessed with the capacity to wield and control their flames without losing their humanity. To fight the Infernal menace and uncover its origin, the Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol created their solution: the Special Fire Force. Eager third-generation pyrokinetic Shinra Kusakabe, nicknamed Devil's Footprints for his explosive talent to ignite his feet at will, joins the lively Special Fire Force Company 8. Upholding the unit's mission to extinguish the raging Infernals and put their spirits to rest, Shinra is resolved to become a hero who rescues those endangered by the flame terror. But this is not the heroic adventure Shinra imagined. The Fire Force is a divided mess of squabbling brigades, abnormal Infernal sightings are on the rise throughout Tokyo, and a mysterious group claims to have knowledge about the strange fire that killed Shinra's family 12 years ago. By the beginning of the 21st century, magic—once dismissed as myth and legend—has been transformed into a structured technology and taught as a technical discipline. At the quake's epicenter, he finds a mysterious girl who is identified as a "Spirit," a supernatural being whose appearance triggers such quakes. Soon, he is caught in a battle between the girl and the Anti-Spirit Team, a ruthless task force dedicated to eliminating Spirits. Yet there is a third group that believes in saving the Spirits: "Ratatoskr," which, surprisingly, is commanded by Shidou's little sister! After the clash, Kotori forcibly enlists Shidou and offers him an alternative approach to handling the danger Spirits pose—make them fall in love with him. Now, the world's fate depends on his dating skills as he sets out to charm the Spirits.

After his clash with his younger brother Shou in the Nether, Shinra Kusakabe's determination to become a hero who rescues people from the flame terror grows stronger. He aims to find a method to revert Infernals back to humans, solve the mysteries of the Evangelist and the Adolla Burst, and save both his mother and Shou. Yet Shinra now understands that achieving these objectives will prove difficult, especially given the immediate threat the Evangelist presents. The Evangelist's intention is evident: to collect the eight pillars—those who possess the Adolla Burst—and offer them as a sacrifice to recreate the Great Cataclysm that occurred 250 years ago. The seven "Level 5" espers reign as the most formidable individuals within the city, with middle schooler Mikoto Misaka, an electricity manipulator known as "The Railgun," holding the third position. As strange incidents start cropping up across the city, she discovers each crime is linked to the mysterious "Level Upper," a legendary device said to boost an esper's level. Before long, Mikoto uncovers a horrifying truth: deadly experiments are being conducted across the city, involving the systematic murder of thousands of espers. Even more shocking, these espers are not ordinary individuals—they are clones of Mikoto herself. Overcome with guilt over their plight, she resolves to stop the experiments. But the enemies she faces are far more formidable than she expected, pitting her against some of the most powerful espers imaginable. Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S follows the Railgun as she desperately battles to end the inhumane experiments she believes she inadvertently caused, plunging her life into deep despair. Academy City never lacks excitement, but not all of it is pleasant.

After the Scorched Halloween incident, the world learns of a Strategic-class magician with extraordinary power. To track down this individual, the United States of the North American Continent sends its elite magician unit, Stars, led by commander Angie Sirius, on a secret mission to Japan. At First High School, Tatsuya Shiba and his friends hold a farewell party for Shizuku Kitayama, who is leaving for an exchange program in the USNA. Her replacement is the striking Angelina Kudou Shields, also known as Lina. Around this time, Tatsuya discovers that the USNA is trying to uncover his true identity. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a series of bodies drained of blood are found, blamed on a vampire. Tatsuya quickly connects the clues and concludes that these attacks are unlikely to be coincidental.

After the massive operation that resulted in the confinement of new recruit Kafka Hibino—also known as Kaijuu No. 8—the Defense Force remains uncertain about how to handle him. As the first kaijuu to ally with humans, Kafka is eventually transferred to the First Division after careful deliberation, with the hope that his power will strengthen the elite unit capable of facing any threat. Yet, lingering doubts about Kafka persist, and he must demonstrate his value in the upcoming mission. Soon, Kafka and the First Division are deployed when a massive swarm of ant-like kaijuu begins causing destruction. With the combined strength of Kafka's friend Kikoru Shinomiya and their captain, Gen Narumi, the mission appears to proceed smoothly. His routine is disrupted when he finds and aids a starving woman on the street, who then leads him to her apartment. There, she reveals her true identity as Nia Honjou, a well-known manga artist writing under a pseudonym, and discloses that she is a Spirit who knows the details of his secret work. Eager to test his charm, Nia dares Shidou to take her on a date. While attempting to seal her powers, Shidou uncovers more about Nia and her past connection to Deus Ex Machina Industries, an organization he knows all too well.

Shiki has spent his entire life surrounded by machines. At Granbell Kingdom, a deserted amusement park that hasn't seen visitors in a century, he is the only human. Everything changes when Rebecca Bluegarden and her cat companion Happy show up, hoping to film content for their B-Cube channel. Instead, they befriend the socially awkward Shiki. When Granbell becomes too hazardous for the trio, they embark on a journey across the Sakura Cosmos. Their goals include creating more exciting videos and searching for the legendary goddess Mother, while Shiki—inspired by his late grandfather's words—seeks to make more friends.
