Synopsis
In 742 AD, two Japanese monks, Yoei and Fusho, journey to Daming Temple in Yangzhou, China, to request the help of Abbot Jian Zhen in introducing Buddhist precepts to Japan. Despite objections from his own disciples, Jian Zhen willingly takes on this charge. Beginning in 743 AD, he launches several attempts to cross the sea to Japan, finally achieving success on his sixth try. By then, he has lost his sight, yet his resolve and dedication remain unshaken. Accompanied by a number of Chinese craftsmen, Jian Zhen—himself a proficient healer—proceeds to greatly advance Buddhism in Japan, along with its culture, architecture, and traditional Chinese medicine.
