In the early 21st century, magic has evolved from myth into a codified science taught as a specialized subject at various educational institutions. First High School, a renowned academy for aspiring magicians, segregates its student body into two factions based on entrance exam results: the high-scoring "Blooms" who join the First Course, and the "Weeds" who are assigned to the Second Course. The narrative centers on siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba as they enroll at First High School. Following their examinations, Miyuki's extraordinary aptitude earns her a place in the First Course, whereas Tatsuya is demoted to the Second Course as a "Weed" due to his lackluster practical performance. Despite this classification, Tatsuya harbors profound theoretical insight, exceptional martial arts skills, and distinct magical capabilities, establishing him as a true irregular within this structured magical society.

Three decades ago, a colossal "spatial quake," a baffling spatial anomaly, ravaged the Eurasian continent, claiming more than 150 million lives. Although these disturbances have since occurred globally on a reduced scale, the threat remains. Shidou Itsuka is a typical high schooler residing with his younger sister, Kotori. When a spatial quake looms over Tengu City, Shidou dashes to shield Kotori but becomes engulfed in the eruption. At the epicenter, he encounters a mysterious girl identified as a "Spirit," a supernatural entity whose existence triggers these quakes. Shidou is immediately thrust into a clash between this girl and the Anti-Spirit Team, a brutal organization committed to exterminating Spirits. However, a third faction known as "Ratatoskr" appears, advocating for the preservation of Spirits. To Shidou's shock, this group is commanded by his own sister. Following the confrontation, Kotori compels Shidou to enlist in their mission, unveiling a peculiar strategy to neutralize the Spirit threat: making them fall in love with him. The future of the world now hinges on Shidou's capacity to capture the hearts of the Spirits.

Following his confrontation with his brother Shou in the Nether, Shinra Kusakabe's resolve to become a hero who protects humanity from the Flame Hazard intensifies. His goals are to find a method to revert Infernals back to humans, expose the truths behind the Evangelist and the Adolla Burst, and rescue both his mother and Shou. Yet, Shinra is acutely aware of the daunting obstacles ahead, particularly the threat posed by the Evangelist. The Evangelist's plan is simple: collect the eight pillars, individuals gifted with the Adolla Burst, and sacrifice them to reenact the Great Cataclysm from 250 years ago. Located in Japan, Academy City is a futuristic metropolis that stands thirty years ahead of the rest of the world in scientific and technological progress. More than seventy-five percent of its inhabitants are students training their psychic abilities at various institutions. Touma Kamijou, a high school student, is ranked at the bottom with a level-zero ability, yet he wields a unique power named Imagine Breaker capable of neutralizing any supernatural force. Despite this extraordinary capability, Touma lives a normal life until he encounters Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a girl who has memorized every forbidden book of magic. When a dangerous group targets her, Touma vows to protect her from the magicians threatening her life, pulling him into a hidden world of the supernatural.

Following the destruction of their hometown by colossal monsters known as kaijuu, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vowed to join the Defense Force, the military organization dedicated to shielding Japan from these giant threats. Years later, the now 32-year-old Kafka has abandoned his dream of heroism to work cleaning up the remains of fallen kaijuu, whereas Mina has successfully become a member of the Defense Force. Kafka's life takes a dramatic turn upon meeting his new coworker, Reno Ichikawa, a determined young man who shares the dream Kafka once held of becoming a Defense Force officer. Disaster strikes when they encounter a rogue kaijuu; despite his doubts, Kafka saves Reno by revealing hidden heroic qualities, though he sustains severe injuries in the process. While recovering in the hospital, Kafka is attacked and gains the ability to transform into a humanoid form of a kaijuu, granting him the immense power of these titanic creatures. This new ability earns him the military designation "Kaijuu No. 8." Embracing his second chance at being a hero, Kafka teams up with Reno, who respects his courage, and they join forces with seasoned fighters like Mina to defend Japan from the kaijuu threat on the frontlines of the Defense Force.

In Date A Live II, Spirits remain immensely powerful supernatural entities whose mere presence triggers devastating spatial disturbances. While some factions attempt to annihilate these beings, others strive to win their hearts to neutralize the threat they pose. Having already sealed three Spirits, Shidou Itsuka continues his duties with Ratatoskr, tracking down new Spirits and forging romantic bonds to protect the world. However, this time Shidou and his team confront a menace that transcends the Spirits themselves, as a far more dangerous entity begins to watch their every move.

Academy City stands as a technological metropolis, surpassing the rest of the world by approximately two to three decades. Among its 2.3 million inhabitants, 80% are students whose education focuses on cultivating esper abilities. Misaka Mikoto, one of the city's most potent espers, shares a dormitory with Kuroko Shirai, a high-level esper who serves in Judgement, a student-led law enforcement agency. Both girls are enrolled at Tokiwadai, an exclusive private school for the wealthy and gifted. Kuroko's partner in Judgement is Kazari Uiharu, a low-level esper attending Sakugawa Middle School, where her best friend and classmate is Ruiko Saten, a Level Zero possessing no esper powers. Together, these four become embroiled in various adventures throughout the dynamic scientific city.

In 2071, humanity stands on the brink of extinction, threatened by the Aragami, monstrous beasts immune to all conventional weaponry. To counter this threat, the Fenrir organization has developed God Eaters, humans infused with Oracle cells who wield God Arcs, the sole arms capable of harming the Aragami. Lenka Utsugi is one such warrior, a New-Type God Eater whose God Arc can shift between a blade and a gun. As an elite member of Fenrir, Lenka must hone his abilities to fulfill his vital mission of eradicating the Aragami. With the monsters multiplying at an alarming rate and the survival of the human race hanging by a thread, the entire species' future now rests entirely on the shoulders of the God Eaters.

The arrival of a mysterious black meteorite sparked a D2 invasion, plunging the USA into chaos. Since these creatures loathe music, all performances were banned to ensure public safety, a restriction lasting until 2047. Humanity's sole defense rests with Musicarts, youthful avatars of classical pieces, and their partners, the Conductors. Takt Asahina, a quiet piano prodigy, becomes a Conductor after surviving a D2 assault and forging a bond with Destiny, a Musicart. This same tragedy claimed the life of Cosette, the younger sister of Anna Schneider. To deepen the connection between Takt and Destiny, the three set out on a dangerous trek to the Symphonica Headquarters in New York City. Though terrified of drawing the attention of the very monsters they combat, Takt yearns to play music once more, while Destiny's rigid commitment to her duties frequently causes friction. Traversing D2-ridden lands and facing countless hurdles, they struggle to reach their goal unharmed.

In A Certain Magical Index II, the escalating tension between the magical world and Academy City compels Touma Kamijou to depend on his negation ability to protect those he holds dear, battling both espers and magicians. He is supported by trusted allies and faced with new enemies, some of whom forge alliances while others lurk in the shadows, all contributing to the increasingly complex struggle. As a sequel to the action and comedy series, the story follows Touma and his companions as they face a conflict of greater magnitude. The looming threat of war becomes more pronounced, laying the groundwork for another major clash between magic and science in the battles to come.

In Date A Live III, Shidou Itsuka carries on with his task for Ratatoskr, finding and containing Spirits while strengthening his connections with those he has already sealed. As fresh Spirits appear, he takes on harder missions to stop more catastrophes. Along the way, Shidou learns more about where the Spirits truly come from.

In "A Certain Scientific Railgun S," Mikoto Misaka and her friends investigate unsettling rumors spreading through Academy City. They uncover a grim truth: secret experiments are being conducted, killing numerous espers—clones created in Mikoto's image. Overwhelmed by guilt for their suffering, she vows to stop these experiments. However, her enemies are far more powerful than she expects, including some of the most formidable espers. This story follows the Railgun as she fights to end the inhumane experiments she believes she unintentionally set in motion, plunging her life into deep despair. Academy City is always full of excitement, but not all of it is pleasant.

Following the Scorched Halloween incident, the world learns of a Strategic-class magician with overwhelming power. In response, the United States of the North American Continent sends its elite magician unit, Stars, led by Angie Sirius, on a covert mission to Japan. At First High School, Tatsuya Shiba and his friends hold a farewell party for Shizuku Kitayama, who is leaving for an exchange program in the USNA. Her replacement turns out to be the striking Angelina Kudou Shields, known by the nickname Lina. Meanwhile, Tatsuya discovers that the USNA is trying to uncover his true identity. In Tokyo, several corpses drained of blood are found, initially blamed on a vampire. Tatsuya quickly pieces together the evidence and concludes that these attacks are likely not unrelated.

Following the complex operation that resulted in the containment of newly enlisted member Kafka Hibino, also known as Kaiju No. 8, the Defense Force remains uncertain about how to handle him. However, when Kafka struggles to transform into his kaiju form, the formidable Kaiju No. 9 enters the battle with the sole purpose of eliminating Kafka and seizing his abilities. The situation appears dire, but Kafka must overcome this daunting challenge alongside his fellow soldiers if he hopes to continue his aspiration: fighting alongside his childhood friend and the Third Division's captain, Mina Ashiro.

As a result, when Shinra and the rest of Company 8 set out on a mission to rescue their captain and free Tokyo, they are labeled as rebels.

In Date A Live IV, Shidou Itsuka continues his mission with Ratatoskr, taking on new challenges after overcoming previous ones. His everyday life is disrupted when he encounters and helps a starving woman on the street, eventually following her to her apartment. There, she reveals herself as Nia Honjou, a famous manga artist using a pen name, and also a Spirit who knows about Shidou's secret operations. Intrigued by testing his charm, Nia challenges Shidou to a date. As he works to contain her abilities, Shidou learns more about Nia and her connection to Deus Ex Machina Industries, an organization he knows all too well.

In the abandoned amusement park Granbell Kingdom, which has not seen any human visitors for over a hundred years, Shiki lives as the only human among machines. His life changes when Rebecca Bluegarden and her cat Happy arrive to film content for their B-Cube channel, and they end up befriending the socially awkward Shiki. As Granbell grows dangerous, the three set off on a journey through the Sakura Cosmos, aiming to make more exciting videos and find the legendary goddess Mother. Inspired by his late grandfather's words, Shiki is determined to make more friends, even though no one has ever met Mother, as he pursues his goals and explores the cosmos with his new companions.

In a post-apocalyptic Japan reduced to a vast desert, a mysterious rust disease threatens what remains of civilization. In A Certain Magical Index III, Touma Kamijou keeps confronting unrelenting trials. Following the attack on Academy City, the clash between science and magic camps grows more intense, risking a full-scale war with the Roman Catholic Church that could drag the world into global conflict. Touma once again ends up on the front lines, trying to protect his friends and allies. This concluding arc of the original series follows the paths of Touma, Accelerator, and the real Level 0 Shiage Hamazura as they each go through their own journeys, leading to the ending of the original light novel series.
