Synopsis
In a world where immortality was once ordinary, a century-long war brought down the gods and left the mysterious "Book of Life and Death" in mortal hands. Young archaeologist Lu Yun's life changed drastically when he discovered an unidentified tomb during an expedition, leading him through the Book of Heaven to the Immortal Realm. There, he became the Langxie Tian Xuanzhou Prefecture Shepherd in Xuanzhou City, but his position was soon contested by rival powerful clans. Struggling with cultivation, Lu Yun ventured into the Xuanchi Mountain tomb with a female envoy to obtain the Jiuqiao Jindan, a pill that could transform his physical form. They narrowly escaped traps, a thousand-year-old corpse monster, and swarms of corpse flies before finding safety in the opulent chamber of the Shi Ling queen. With the Book of Life and Death, Lu Yun uncovered the likeness of Dan Xian Yuying, the previous shepherd and first reincarnation messenger in the Book of Heaven. By recovering Dan Xian's essence, Lu Yun enhanced his body and negotiated with Emperor Langxie to solidify his position. Recurring dreams filled with foreign memories and images of the Book of Heaven trembling, surrounded by nine dragons and coffins, hinted at deeper mysteries. To unravel these, Lu Yun traveled to Xuanshui City by the Xuanhe River, where he found a swaddled infant in a darkened room and box. Rescuing the child, he plunged into the Xuanhe River, where the ruined Water Palace was overrun with Gandalf-like monsters. After evading a horde, they confronted the demonic Xuanhe River God. To save ally Qinghan, Lu Yun used the Floating Life Map, channeling the Book of Life and Death's power to subdue the River God and gain a new ability. Having defeated the fourth reincarnation messenger, each symbolizing expertise in Talisman Dao, Martial Dao, Formations, or Refining, Lu Yun grew closer to understanding the scripture's truths. Despite his rising power, the Curse King, watching from the peak of Jiuzhongtian, saw Lu Yun as a mere insect reaching beyond its station.
