Synopsis
Hirayama Jirou lost his mother in the Great Kanto Earthquake and now helps his father run a soba stall. He chooses to become a crew member of the celebrated ocean liner Hikawa Maru, landing a job as a cook in the ship's galley. Through his perspective, the film examines the vessel's 85-year history.
Background
Hikawa Maru Monogatari is based on Genjirou Itou's book of the same name. The film commemorates the 85th anniversary of the ocean liner Hikawa Maru's maiden voyage. The ship is permanently berthed as a museum ship in Yokohama.
