Synopsis
Human society no longer revolves around fire but instead lives in fear of it. Repeated conflicts have altered human biology, causing people to spontaneously ignite when they come near natural flame. A stone-like material found inside monsters that infest countless forests provides a new energy source that prevents total societal collapse, producing light and steam. Those who gather this precious resource are known as fire hunters. Touko, a girl from a village, is rescued from a forest monster by a fire hunter who dies in the act. Once the hunter's dog, Kanata, recovers from his own injury, Touko's family sends her to the capital to return Kanata and the hunter's fire sickle to his relatives. Meanwhile, the fire hunter's son, Koushi, and his sister are adopted by a wealthy family. Koushi uncovers disturbing truths connected to the country's ruling royal family. He conducts secret research on a special fire stone discovered by his late father, setting off a race between the nation's leaders and those striving to save humanity from its final destruction.
