Synopsis
The meandering Quma River irrigates fertile lands that support the prosperous town of Qianhu, where the opulent lifestyle of its residents contrasts sharply with the dire conditions endured by its slaves. Among these unfortunate souls are four orphaned sisters: Luodan, Xiumo, Namu, and Shema Laqing. One night, Qianhu had a vivid dream of a mountain brimming with treasures such as gold, silver, pearls, and agates. To claim these riches, she had to present offerings of barley, grapes, and butterflies to the mountain’s divine guardian. Upon awakening, Qianhu instructed Luodan, Xiumo, and Shema Laqing to set out in search of the three items, even though the harsh, icy terrain made the mission nearly impossible. Understanding that their perilous journey would likely lead to their deaths, the sisters reluctantly departed. Concerned for their safety, Namu pleaded with Qianhu to allow her to undertake the journey alone instead. During their travels, the sisters transformed into barley, grapes, and butterflies, imploring Namu to hurry back. However, the sisters' demise and the freezing temperatures weakened Namu to the point of immobility, leaving her to succumb to the snow. Moved by their plight, the Gangdise Mountain God then appeared.
