Synopsis
Rennyo was the central figure who revived Shin Buddhism in Japan, especially the Honganji lineage, during a period of decline in the Middle Ages. Legend holds that his drive came from a crucial event in his childhood when he was only six years old: his mother called him and told him of his fate to restore the Honganji school, which he was destined to lead. She then vanished mysteriously from the temple. Taking her words seriously, despite growing up in extreme poverty and hardship, he began traveling across the country at the age of 16 to spread the teachings.
