Synopsis

Patema is a spunky young girl who lives in an underground civilization with an extensive network of tunnels. Inspired by a friend who vanished under mysterious circumstances, she often gets scolded for her frequent explorations of these tunnels because of her royal position. When she ventures into what is called the "forbidden zone," she accidentally plunges into a vast, seemingly bottomless pit after being startled by a strange creature. Upon finding herself on the surface—a world that is literally upside down—she begins to fall upward toward the sky, only to be rescued by Age, a disillusioned student from the totalitarian nation known as Aiga. The citizens of Aiga are taught that "Inverts" like Patema are sinners who will be "swallowed by the sky," but Age has rejected this propaganda and chooses to protect his new friend. A chance encounter between two curious teenagers leads them to explore two distinct worlds as they join forces to uncover the truth behind their origins in Sakasama no Patema, a heartwarming film about overcoming differences in order to coexist.
