Synopsis
During World War II, in an isolated mountain village in Kōchi Prefecture, the inhabitants hold a firm belief that Americans and British are "brutes," a view reinforced by the deaths of their relatives. Eiko, a young elementary school student with blue eyes inherited from her American father, moves from Yokohama to this village and is subjected to constant bullying from her classmates. Nevertheless, her homeroom teacher Akiko shows her a certain amount of kindness, while the rest of the staff share the students' prejudices. Kenta, a boy in Eiko's class, distinguishes himself by approaching her with curiosity rather than hostility. The village's circumstances change when the wounded father of one of Kenta's classmates returns from the war, and additional casualty reports reach the community, deeply affecting the children's lives.
