This tale follows Maria as she abandons her convent existence to take on the role of caring for the children of Captain Trapp, based on the same source material that inspired the iconic musical The Sound of Music.

An evil alien life form named Dryus launched an attack on Earth. The leader of the Space Patrol, Fighbird, chased Dryus to Earth. Upon arrival, Fighbird merged with an android that Dr. Amano was developing. Taking the name Hidori Ryutaro, Fighbird battles Dryus to safeguard Earth's peace. At first glance, he appears to be an ordinary person, but because he is actually the alien Fighbird, his behavior deviates slightly from normal humans. He usually works as Dr. Amano's assistant. He looks unkempt, always wearing a white coat and glasses. However, once an enemy appears, his personality undergoes a dramatic transformation.

Chitose Fujinomiya is a girl whose life swings between wealth and poverty, yet she maintains her snobbish attitude regardless of her circumstances. After her wealthy father passes away, his debts leave Chitose nearly destitute, resulting in her expulsion from the elite Tokai no Gakuen, also known as City Academy. With only the clothes on her back and Gyopi-chan, a pink goldfish that serves as her sole keepsake from her father, she finds herself with nothing. While wandering aimlessly, she collapses on the campus of Inaka no Chugakko, or Country Jr. High School. This institution is characterized by its cheerful but rugged students, as well as farm animals that frequently wander the grounds and even attend lessons. Although she recovers and enrolls, Chitose is repulsed by the school’s impoverished atmosphere, which is entirely unfamiliar to her.

Patricia and Isabel O'Sullivan arrive at St. Claire, a college for girls, to study and live in their new home. There, they meet Alison, Wella, Catherine, and Doris, who also reside at St. Claire, and join them in team spirit. A mermaid named Marina falls in love with Prince Justin, a human prince from a nearby coastal kingdom. After a giant Cyclops chases Justin and a three-headed sea serpent attacks his ship, he nearly drowns, but Marina saves him. She then strikes a bargain with Hedwig the sea witch to become human temporarily in hopes of winning Justin’s heart. Justin grows close to Marina, but he mistakenly believes that Princess Cecily, a human princess, rescued him from drowning and becomes engaged to her. Eventually Justin remembers that Marina was his true savior, but by then she has turned back into a mermaid. The two continue meeting in secret, searching for a way to be together while thwarting Hedwig’s scheme to seize the kingdom and Cecily’s efforts to force Justin into marriage. Marina and Justin receive help from their underwater friends: Winnie the seahorse, Bobo the tropical fish, and Ridley the sea otter, as well as from the wizard Anselm and Justin’s page, Chauncey.
