The misfortunes of Nobita Nobi are so severe that his descendants in the 22nd century remain impoverished due to his blunders in the 20th century. To improve their social standing, their servant—a robotic cat named Doraemon—journeys back in time to steer Nobita toward a more prosperous path. However, Doraemon himself is a malfunctioning robot that the family acquired by chance (though they decided to keep him), and he is hardly more capable than Nobita. The cat leads Nobita through numerous adventures, and while Nobita's existence becomes far more exciting with the futuristic robot companion, it remains uncertain whether his life is genuinely better in the way Doraemon intended.

Viewed through the eyes of insects, this story tackles environmental concerns. Defying the usual trope of a protagonist who grows giant, the main character instead shrinks down. Due to cold and hunger, he collapsed in the yard of Shishio's house, and Shishio took care of him. Kurobe felt deeply grateful and started to repay his kindness. Kurobe dug a large hole in the yard. Each time he returned a favor, he tossed a stone into the hole until the stones would fill it.
