Fourteen-year-old delinquent Yuusuke Urameshi wastes his days cutting class and antagonizing the adults around him. He frequently gets into street fights with his rival Kazuma Kuwabara and mocks his childhood friend Keiko Yukimura. Burdened by self-hatred and the weight of an alcoholic mother, Yuusuke makes a split-second decision—he shoves a small child out of the path of an oncoming car, sacrificing his own life. Spirit guide Botan steps in, letting Yuusuke witness how those he left behind react to his death; he is deeply affected by the devastation his loss inflicts on his mother, Keiko, and even Kuwabara. Furthermore, because his death was heroic, he is given a second chance at life by Koenma, the son of the Spirit World ruler. Koenma recruits Yuusuke as a "Spirit Detective" and assigns him to solve a string of increasingly difficult paranormal cases. Fighting and eventually forming bonds with demons like the elegant Kurama and the aggressive Hiei, Yuusuke hones his combat abilities. However, as sinister forces emerge from the Underworld, Yuusuke stands with his allies to protect the things he once took for granted.

Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho won the 39th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category in 1993. The series was published in English as Yu Yu Hakusho by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from August 18, 2003, to March 2, 2010. It was also released in Spanish by Glénat in 2004; and in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC in 38 volumes from November 2002 to November 2004. The series was adapted into a live-action TV series that premiered on Netflix on December 14, 2023.
