During World War II, Japan is regarded as an enemy by the whole world and suffers frequent bombings and aerial assaults. In this time of endless conflict and widespread uncertainty about the future, love grows between two young people, Chieko Mochida and Toshio Anazawa. Even though their feelings are mutual, the ongoing war and their own difficult circumstances continually keep them apart. After Toshio joins the military to defend the country, the distance between them grows even greater. Still, Chieko and Toshio stay devoted to their relationship through love letters—while also having to endure the harsh realities of war. On his way to art school in Tokyo, ambitious Shinichi Nagakawa is in a traffic accident along with a girl he does not know. When they regain consciousness, seemingly alone in a strange empty space, a mysterious voice informs them that they are dead. However, one of them can be brought back to life: the other must sacrifice themselves. Shocked by this situation, they are given seven days to make their choice—during which time they also share each other's emotions and sensations. At first reluctant, the girl eventually opens up to Shinichi and tells him her name is Yuuki Sanada. As the final day approaches, Shinichi and Yuuki become closer, gradually discovering the regrets they still carry and their genuine feelings for each other. Kenji Kuroda has had feelings for his senior, Hazuki Itou, since the start of high school, and finally gathers the courage to give her a love letter. However, the letter ends up with another girl named Azusa Itou, who happily accepts Kenji's confession. Influenced by Azusa's cheerful and innocent nature, Kenji hesitantly begins dating her. As Kenji's feelings continue to shift because of Azusa, what will become of their relationship that started from a simple mistake?
