In the remote village of Sotoba, nothing out of the ordinary ever occurs. Megumi Shimizu, the most outgoing and fashion-conscious resident, sees it as nothing more than a backwater. She longs to escape to the city, far from the villagers' old-fashioned attitudes. So when a new European-style mansion appears on a hill, Megumi assumes its occupants must be cultured and sophisticated, and she decides to introduce herself.
But Megumi never returns home that night. After an intense search, she is discovered the next day, weak and pale, with strange bite marks on her body. However, Megumi is only the first casualty in what quickly becomes an epidemic across Sotoba as bodies begin to accumulate. Village doctor Toshio Ozaki, along with priest Seishin Muroi, the reclusive Natsuno Yuuki, and siblings Kaori and Akira Tanaka, start looking into the mysterious deaths. The truth behind the crisis may prove far more than they can handle, as the dead soon threaten to surpass the living in number.
