In the Asakusa district of Tokyo, there is a quiet mansion called Ayakashi-sou. Though spacious, it is home to only a single sixteen-year-old girl. However, the mansion gets its name from the ayakashi—Japanese spirits and ghosts that dwell within. Living there are Kuuko, a mischievous fox girl who loves pranks, and Yukime, a gentle snow-woman. The childlike Zashikiwarashi Kii watches over the building. Soon they are joined by a newly created cat youkai named Nene, who has no other place to go. The building's owner is Mahoro Miyatsuka, who inherited it from her late grandmother because she can see and interact with the spirits. While this ability lets her connect with the ayakashi, Mahoro's habit of talking to invisible people has caused her classmates to avoid her. Still, she is happy taking care of her ghostly companions as they spend their days watching fireworks, playing games, and living life one day at a time.
