This version of the story, a remake of the original Ribbon no Kishi, is the more widely recognized retelling. Set in a medieval fairy-tale world, Princess Knight follows young Princess Sapphire, who is forced to disguise herself as a male prince in order to claim the throne—since women are barred from ruling. The ruse starts at her birth, when her father the King announces that his newborn is a boy rather than a girl. He does this because the next heir, Duke Duralumon, is a wicked man who would oppress the people if he became king, and the King will stop at nothing to prevent that.
