Life on Destiny Islands is peaceful and carefree, but three friends—Sora, Riku, and Kairi—yearn to discover the worlds beyond. Their wish comes true sooner than expected when dark beings called Heartless invade their island. Overwhelmed by these creatures, the island is consumed by darkness, taking Riku and Kairi with it. Just before Sora is lost to the shadows, a weapon of light appears in his hand: the Keyblade, which gives him the strength to defeat the Heartless. In the Disney realm, chaos erupts when King Mickey Mouse vanishes. He leaves behind a note explaining that he has gone to investigate a grave threat to all worlds. He instructs his assistants, Donald Duck and Goofy, to find the one who carries a "key"—the only hope against the crisis. So the two set out on their search, their first stop being Traverse Town. Sora awakens in that same town, only to find it also infested with Heartless. Though his priority is reuniting with his friends, as the Keyblade's wielder he must accept the destiny thrust upon him: many worlds are under attack, and he and the Keyblade are the only chance to set them free.
