Subaru Natsuki regains consciousness to find two girls, sisters Rem and Ram, standing in a room he doesn't recognize. He makes a playful remark about their synchronized manner of speaking, but before he can continue, Emilia—the beautiful girl he saved at the cost of three deaths using his "Return By Death" ability, which sends him back to a save point each time he dies—interrupts him. Emilia explains that she brought him to her mansion because of the injury he sustained while protecting her from Elsa Granhiert. There, Subaru meets the clownlike Count Roswaal L. Mathers, who owns the estate. During breakfast, Subaru asks for a reward: permission to work as a butler alongside Rem and Ram. Roswaal quickly agrees. Everything appears to be going smoothly for Subaru. But after a few days in the mansion, he mysteriously wakes up at the starting point once more, a grim reminder of his power. Can Subaru solve the riddle of his own death, or will his spirit be the first to break?
