Overdevelopment and overcrowding in Japan have caused many of the country's indigenous spirits and ghosts to lose their homes. Because of the problems these homeless spirits create, a new line of work emerged: the Ghost Sweeper (GS). These private exorcists hire themselves out to the highest bidder, struggling to survive in a ruthless corporate environment. Among them, the Mikami GS Company—run by Reiko Mikami and her two assistants, teenage boy Tadao Yokoshima and the ghost girl Okinu—is considered the best.
