Akagi: Yami ni Oritatta Tensai

Mahjong is commonly enjoyed among family and friends, yet it also takes place in society's most shadowy corners. Nangou, a compulsive gambler, carries a debt exceeding three million yen. In a final attempt to settle his record, he bets his life on a mahjong match against the mafia. As the game proceeds, Nangou finds himself drifting further from victory and closer to death. Just when all hope appears lost, the game parlor is suddenly entered by Shigeru Akagi, a young boy fleeing from the police. Desperate to change his luck, Nangou passes the game to Akagi after briefly explaining some of the rules. The mafia can only sneer as Akagi takes his seat. However, they soon discover that Akagi is a born gambler—an imposing presence who holds no fear of death, someone fated to become a legend.

Akagi: Yami ni Oritatta Tensai was adapted into two V-Cinema films that were released in 1995 and 1997. It was also adapted into a Japanese live-action TV series with two sequel seasons. Multiple games based on the manga have also been released.
