While walking home from the convenience store, Subaru Natsuki suddenly finds himself in an unknown city, surrounded by strangers speaking an unfamiliar language. He quickly pieces together that he has been transported to another world. After being chased away by a storekeeper for having no money, Subaru is cornered by a group of thugs. Just when he thinks all is lost, a mysterious girl named Satella rescues him. She is pursuing a thief that Subaru had previously spotted in town. After Satella drives off the thugs, Subaru decides to repay her by assisting in the search for the thief. Through a chain of events, the two end up in a cellar known for storing stolen goods. Shortly after entering the house, they are ambushed by a dark figure, and neither survives the attack. Subaru opens his eyes to find that he has been sent back in time to earlier that day, beginning a confusing series of loops in which he relives past events.
