The Sonozaki family in Hinamizawa has always separated twin sisters Mion and Shion for as long as they can recall. Mion is destined to become the next head of the Sonozaki household, while Shion is sent to St. Lucia Academy, far away from her beloved sister and the rest of their kin. However, Shion flees the school and returns to Hinamizawa, unaware of the cruel tragedy that lies ahead. After reuniting with her sister and taking a part-time job—while masquerading as Mion—she encounters Satoshi Houjou, a boy her age whom she falls desperately in love with. Yet when she discovers Satoshi's terrible domestic circumstances, she starts to harbor resentment toward everyone in his household, including his younger sister, Satoko. As tensions mount and Satoshi suddenly vanishes, Shion begins to suspect that her own family might be involved in his disappearance. One year later, Shion meets Keiichi Maebara, the object of Mion's affection. Her sister's crush on Keiichi rekindles Shion's lingering feelings for Satoshi and ignites a fierce determination to uncover the truth behind his disappearance once and for all. But Shion's pursuit of the truth will drive her down a dark descent into madness and hopelessness.
