Shigeshoushi

Shinjuurou Mamiya works as an embalmer, a profession viewed as "unclean" in Japanese society due to religious customs and the rarity of people seeking such services. Despite this stigma, he commits himself to preserving the dignity of the dead, accepting the isolation that comes with his career. Although he sees few clients, his skill is unmatched. Shinjuurou seizes every chance to display his talent for preparing a body so that mourners can believe their loved one is simply asleep. Through each embalming, Shigeshoushi explores the complex emotional bonds between life, death, loss, and mourning. Shinjuurou brings out the inherent beauty of the departed, offering their grieving families a final chance to say goodbye properly.

Background

Shigeshoushi was published in English as The Embalmer by Tokyopop in four volumes from August 8, 2006 to August 1, 2007, before the license was dropped and the publisher went defunct. It has also been published in Polish by Hanami from 2008 to 2013. The manga was given a live-action drama adaptation that ran from October 5, 2007 to December 21, 2007 on TV Tokyo, Aichi Television Broadcasting, and TVQ Kyushu.
