Set during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, which marks the beginning of the Han dynasty’s downfall, Sangokushi: Dai Ichi Bu - Eiyuu-tachi no Yoake introduces Liu Bei, who will later become the central figure, and Cao Cao, his future adversary. At first, neither holds any significant power in the events unfolding. Liu Bei sets out on a journey to bring back peace and stability. On the way, he encounters the formidable warriors Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, forging deep bonds with them. They swear the Oath of the Peach Garden, pledging to fight for righteousness. Meanwhile, Cao Cao contemplates his legacy, wondering whether he will be seen as a hero in times of turmoil or a despot during peaceful eras.
In the early stages, the warlord Dong Zhuo and his trusted lieutenant Lu Bu dominate the political scene. A personal rift between them, however, causes their split, giving Cao Zhao a chance to ascend. Though Lu Bu is unmatched in combat, Cao Cao experiences an extraordinary series of military victories. Liu Bei tries to hold fast to his ideals, yet he remains a minor player amid the greater contest for dominance over China. As the nation sinks into an unending cycle of wars with no end in sight, the groundwork is laid for the events of the following films.
