In the magical kingdom of Magic, the kind and mischievous princess Sally grows curious about the human world. She ventures there for the first time and crosses paths with Yoshiko "Yocchan" Hanamura and Sumire Kasugano at a department store. The three quickly become friends, and the girls often spend time at the mansion Sally conjures up with magic. One night, Yocchan and Sumire remember they left something behind at the store and go back even though it's closed. Sally and her younger brother Cub—sent by their parents to bring Sally home—trail them and discover the girls have been taken hostage by thieves. Using their magic, Sally and Cub drive off the criminals and rescue their friends, all while keeping their powers a secret from the two girls. Moved by the bonds she's formed and the thrill of life among humans, Sally decides to remain. She takes the surname Yumeno and enrolls in school alongside Yocchan and Sumire. Cub chooses to stay with her as well. Together, they create a wide circle of friends and go on many adventures, blending magic into their daily routines.

Known as "Manual of Ninja Martial Arts," this work stands as the sole animated feature from celebrated Japanese New Wave director Nagisa Oshima, carrying the distinctive edge expected of such a prominent filmmaker. The narrative draws from Sanpei Shirato's acclaimed manga, centering on the son of a slain feudal lord during the Muromachi period as he seeks vengeance against those who murdered his father. Along his path, he crosses paths with Kagemaru, a rogue ninja devoted to aiding peasants and farmers rising up against the rule of Oda Nobunaga.

The film faced backlash for portraying Goku as overly eager in his student role, prompting a reimagining of him as a lively, modern child. This shift sparked numerous complaints from the PTA regarding improper language, ultimately resulting in the movie being removed from broadcast.
