Personal Information
Hailing from Osaka, Tsutsui Yasutaka stands alongside Shinichi Hoshi and Sakyo Komatsu as one of Japan's most renowned science fiction authors. His literary achievements include the 1987 Tanizaki Prize for Yumenokizaka bunkiten, as well as the 1981 Izumi Kyoka award, the 1989 Kawabata Yasunari award, and the 1992 Japan SF award. In recognition of his contributions, the French government honored him with the Chevalier Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1997. Tsutsui's writing is characterized by dark humor and satire, often targeting Japanese taboos such as disabilities and the Tenno system, which has frequently drawn sharp criticism. In response to what he viewed as excessive self-imposed restraint by Japanese publishers, he undertook a writing strike lasting from 1993 to 1996.
