Born in Los Angeles, United States, Mackenyu Arata began his acting career during his teenage years. His professional trajectory accelerated in Japan in 2015, marked by three supporting roles in TV mini-series and a lead performance in the live-action film Kamen Rider Drive. In January 2016, he made his stage debut in the musical Boys Over Flowers and starred as a lead in the two-part film series Chihayafuru Part I & II. His rising prominence in Japan earned him the cover of AN Magazine in March 2016. Later that same year, he secured a leading role in the series ZAPS, Inc., appeared in the feature film Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and played a supporting character in Pacific Rim: Uprising. In 2017, his work in Chihayafuru was honored with the Best New Talent Award at the Japan Academy Awards.
