Personal Information
Born to a reporter-artist and a surgeon, John Carradine was raised in Poughkeepsie, New York. His early education included time at Christ Church School and the Graphic Art School, where he focused on sculpture before traveling through the South selling his sketches. Carradine made his acting debut in 1925, performing in "Camille" at a New Orleans theatre. After moving to Los Angeles in 1927, he worked in local theatre productions. Although Cecil B. DeMille rejected his scenic design portfolio when Carradine applied for a position, DeMille did offer him voice work for several films. His first on-screen appearance came in 1930's "Tol'able David," where he was credited as Peter Richmond. A protégé and close friend of John Barrymore, Carradine became an exceptionally prolific character actor in film while sustaining a stage career in classic leading roles, including Hamlet and Malvolio. In his later years, Carradine was frequently cast as a horror star, appearing in numerous low- and ultra-low-budget horror films. He was also a member of the ensemble of actors frequently employed by director John Ford, a group that became known as "The John Ford Stock Company." John Carradine passed away on November 27, 1988, at the age of 82 due to natural causes.
