He holds the record for the most reigns as IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and his fifth reign stands as the record holder for the most successful defenses with eleven. Additionally, Tanahashi has claimed victory in NJPW's premier tournament, the G1 Climax, on three occasions: 2007, 2015, and 2018.
