Personal Information

Born and currently residing in Tokyo, Japan, Furuya Usamaru followed an unconventional route to becoming a manga artist. His artistic background includes studying sculpture and abstract three-dimensional forms in art school, as well as a period of involvement in butoh dance. Before establishing himself in comics, he worked as a high school art teacher. Furuya made his manga debut in 1994 with the groundbreaking four-panel gag strip Palepoli, which was serialized in the legendary avant-garde magazine Garo. Since that debut, he has expanded his reach to major weekly Japanese magazines, including Young Sunday, where Short Cuts first appeared. His work has also been published in English through PULP: The Manga Magazine and Secret Comics Japan.
