Personal Information
Sondra James Weil, known professionally as Sondra James, was born on July 21, 1939, and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1955 before earning a degree with double majors in anthropology and archeology from City College. James appeared in numerous films, including Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Taking Woodstock (2009), The Dictator (2012), Don't Think Twice (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Joker (2019), and Shiva Baby (2020). Her television credits span Law & Order, 30 Rock, Blue Bloods, Ray Donovan, Crisis in Six Scenes, At Home With Amy Sedaris, and What We Do in the Shadows. Her stage career began with a 1996 national tour of Funny Girl starring Debbie Gibson, followed by a 2002 tour with Valerie Harper in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife. Additionally, James founded Speakeasy, a post-production looping group responsible for casting, coordinating, and performing voice work. The group contributed to six seasons of Sex and the City, as well as Bored to Death, Boardwalk Empire, Smash, and Damages. Their film projects included True Grit, The Reader, The Devil Wears Prada, and The Sixth Sense. Sondra James died on September 12, 2021, at the age of 85 due to lung cancer.
