In a dystopian tomorrow where virtual reality is all-encompassing and face-to-face human contact is rare, society is on the brink of authoritarian control, with nearly all communication happening through screens. Kids are only allowed to meet in person while on school grounds. Within this regulated setting, a spate of murders aimed at middle school students heightens anxieties, resulting in even stricter oversight of communication networks. The most recent victim was last in contact with three girls: Mio Tsuzki, a well-known genius; Hatsuki Matsuno, a quiet yet forthright student; and Ayumi Kono, Hatsuki’s best friend. While the three try to conceal their inquisitiveness from watchful eyes, Hatsuki discovers a deeper reality lying beneath their monitored conversations.
