In this lighthearted manga, the story follows Kurogane Yaiba, a young samurai whose entire existence centers on the way of the sword. He lives in the forest with his father, Kenjurou, but their peaceful life is disrupted when a gang of gorillas attacks their home. To escape, the two hide inside a crate full of pineapples, which gets shipped to the city. Once there, Yaiba discovers that he is fated to become a legendary warrior and must confront a sinister high school student named Takeshi, who has a demonic appearance. As Yaiba trains to hone his samurai skills, he crosses paths with many people who help, teach, or challenge him. Though he is naive, Yaiba wields his sword with remarkable talent and shows a kind heart toward his friends. Yet his reckless behavior and stubbornness sometimes push potential allies away, but his companions eventually guide him back on course. With this unusual group of comrades, Yaibo embarks on countless fantastical adventures, meeting historical Japanese figures along the way. Together they overcome overwhelming obstacles and risk everything to save the Earth from an alien threat. This tale celebrates love, friendship, hard work, and perseverance.

Background
Yaiba won the 38th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1993. The series has been published in English as Yaiba: Samurai Legend by VIZ Media under the Shonen Sunday imprint as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes since July 8, 2025.
