In "Happiness!", Yuuma Kohinata is a high schooler enrolled in the non-magical division of Mizuhosaka Academy, where he hangs out with his close friends Jun Watarase and Hachisuke Takamizo. The academy also houses a magical division dedicated to training young mages. The story begins a few days before Valentine's Day, when female students are busy buying chocolates for the boys they like, following traditional customs. Haruhi Kamisaka, a student mage, goes shopping with her friend Anri Hiiragi for the same reason. After purchasing chocolates meant for a boy she has known since childhood, Haruhi spots Yuuma stepping in to stop some kids from bullying a young girl. She wonders if he could be the boy she has been searching for. On Valentine's Day at school, the girls hand over their gifts to their chosen boys. Later, Anri challenges Haruhi to a magical duel, demanding the chocolate whose recipient Haruhi refuses to reveal. When Anri loses control during the duel, her magic barely misses Yuuma and his friends. In the end, Haruhi gives Yuuma the chocolate she bought, and Anri does the same, revealing her own intention to offer chocolate to the same boy and compete for his affection. Soon after, a gas explosion devastates the magical section, forcing all mage trainees to temporarily join the regular section. Coincidentally, Haruhi and Anri end up in Yuuma's class. With this change, Haruhi and her companions must adapt to their new environment in the regular division of Mizuhosaka Academy.
