Jungle no Ouja Tar-chan
ジャングルの王者 ターちゃん♡
Originally published in Weekly Shōnen Jump as Jungle King Tar-chan from 1988 to 1990, then continuing as New Jungle King Tar-chan from 1990 to 1995, the manga began as a brief prototype called Tar-san in the 1986 Autumn Special. The initial run was a straightforward gag series parodying Tarzan, with each chapter consisting of independent, humorous adventures lasting about seven pages. These focused on Tar-chan protecting the savanna, Jane, and his animal friends, often leading to comedic situations. As Tar-chan progressed, Super Jump transitioned to a monthly publication, leading to the conclusion of Tokuhiro's other works, Ken-chan and Chako-chan, in 1990. After two years, the manga's chapters expanded to 13–15 pages, the title gained "New," and the episodic gag format evolved into a more complex fighting manga style. The series alternated between extended battles and character development, reverting to gag comedy whenever a conflict ended, only to shift back to intense combat with each new fight. Notably, despite the title Jungle King Tar-chan, the setting is actually a savanna, with no jungle scenes appearing throughout the series.
