On a sweltering summer day, the cicadas sang at full volume. Haruka Nanami, a second-year high school girl, is caught off guard when Kudo Satoru, a boy from another high school, confesses his love to her. Bewildered, Haruka tells him, "We've never even spoken before..." Kudo suggests they start off as friends, and the two trade contact info. Around the same time, a spate of accidents breaks out at a railroad crossing nearby in town. They love each other deeply. They want to be together, but they cannot.
