In the seemingly ordinary Japanese city of Fuyuki, a secret and dangerous struggle unfolds among seven sorcerers called "Masters." Each Master summons a powerful entity known as a "Servant" to battle in a contest where only one can triumph, claiming the Holy Grail—a legendary object said to grant any desire. The war's origins and the Grail's true nature remain unknown, but it is destined to begin again. The main character, Emiya Shirou, lost his parents in a devastating fire and was later adopted by a man who called himself a sorcerer. Following his foster father's example, Shirou started training in sorcery himself, though he could only manage a few simple spells. After the death of his adoptive father, Shirou remained a mostly unskilled sorcerer. His life changes abruptly when he accidentally summons Saber, supposedly the strongest Servant of all, pulling him into the Holy Grail War.

Background

Fate/stay night is an adaptation of the first route of TYPE-MOON's 2004 visual novel for PC. The series was published in English by Tokyopop with eleven volumes released from October 28, 2008 to May 10, 2011 before publication was discontinued. VIZ Media re-released ten of the Tokyopop's volumes digitally under the VIZ Select imprint from May 20 to September 30, 2014.
