"A dying planet shall give birth to the children of light..." During a vacation on a small island, Shiina Tamai discovers an unusual starfish-like creature while swimming underwater near an ancient shrine. As she nearly drowns, this enigmatic being with wide eyes rescues her. Shiina bonds with it and names it Hoshimaru. To her astonishment and delight, the entity can change its form, allowing Shiina to ride it as they soar into the sky. However, what seems like a youthful fantasy soon grows darker as Shiina and Hoshimaru become caught in a cosmic conflict between warring extraterrestrial factions fighting atop enormous creatures known as Shadow Dragons, with Earth's fate hanging in the balance.

Background

Narutaru: Mukuro Naru Hoshi Tama Taru Ko was first published in English as Shadow Star☆ by Dark Horse in the magazine Super Manga Blast from September 13, 2000, to February 1, 2006—issues 5 to 59, which was the final issue. The manga was partially published in standard tankoubon format as well by the same publisher, with seven volumes published from September 5, 2001, to December 21, 2005.
