In a futuristic metropolis where humanoid robots have achieved extreme sophistication, young detective Kenichi becomes entangled in a complicated conflict. After the tragic death of his child, influential politician Duke Red commissions a scientist to create a replacement—a highly realistic, gender-shifting robot named Mitchy. The 1949 manga serves as the foundation for only part of the contemporary Metropolis film narrative and excludes the character Rock, whose film appearance draws inspiration from Phoenix, Nextworld, and other works by Osamu Tezuka.

Metropolis was published in English by Dark Horse Comics on April 22, 2003. It was also released in French by Taifu Comics in 2005; in Spanish by Ediciones Glénat on May 31, 2004; and in Brazilian Portuguese by NewPOP Editora in August 2010.
