Reiji Oozora is failing in both his studies and social life until his friend Maiko Yukino suggests he drive her somewhere in exchange for her class notes. She leads him to a secret location where a virtual reality game called Dragon Drive is played. Wanting to join, Reiji obtains his own dragon—an unusually tiny and weak one he names Chibi. In their first match against Daisuke, a classmate who has a crush on Maiko, Reiji tries to flee the fight. But Chibi unexpectedly powers up and defeats Daisuke's far stronger dragon, getting Reiji completely hooked on the game. An official named Agent L notices Chibi's remarkable performance and brings Reiji and Maiko to a special training zone. He reveals the true objective of Dragon Drive: unlocking the dragons' full potential. Suddenly, a mysterious girl on a dragon teleports them to a magical fantasy world endangered by an evil group called RI-ON. The fate of this realm rests on Reiji's seemingly useless little dragon, launching their high-stakes adventure.
